ActiveCampaign Review Introduction
Today I am going to be reviewing a powerful email marketing system called ActiveCampaign. This review is based on my own experience personally using ActiveCampaign as a paying customer.
This will be just one of many reviews I am going to do for email automation systems. I have tried out a few different ones and ActiveCampaign is the one that I have stuck with because it suits my needs best. However, just because this system happens to be the one that worked best for me, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be the best email marketing system for you.
One of the great things about ActiveCampaign is that they offer a free trial so you can try it out before you buy it. I would definitely recommend taking advantage of this before making a decision.
Use this email marketing platform to build an impressive customer journey that allows you to grow your list, engage and convert leads into buyers.
If you are not familiar with email marketing or automated email systems, then I suggest you first read my article on “Best Choice Buyer’s Guide: Email Automation Software” to get some background information on the topic.
Email Marketing Systems allow you to automate your email communications with customers and potential customers. This can be done in several ways, but the most common use is to send out automated welcome emails, follow-up emails, and/or abandoned cart recovery emails.
For this review, I am going to focus on the features that are most important to small business owners. Some of the topics we’ll review include:
- The ability to send automated emails
- The ability to create email sequences
- The ability to create custom forms
- The ability to track the success of my email campaigns
- The ability to integrate with other software programs
- The ability to segment customer and lead lists
- The ability to track my open rates and click rates
- The ability to create landing pages
Along with several other available features.

TL;DR: This article is a product review of ActiveCampaign. ActiveCampaign is a powerful email marketing system that I have been using for a while now. It suits my needs well, but it may not be the best system for everyone. It offers a free trial so you can try it out before you buy it.
Why Should You Trust This Review?
My goal is to provide you with an honest and unbiased review of ActiveCampaign. I have not been paid to write this review.
I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be trying to figure out which software systems best fit your business’s specific needs. There are hundreds (if not tens of thousands) of sites offering reviews of different software products. So, how do you know which ones to trust?
The first and most important thing you can do is to make sure the person writing the review has actually used the product they are reviewing. I am a paying customer of ActiveCampaign and have been using it for a while now. My experience with the product is based on my own personal use and not something I heard (or read) from someone else.
The second thing I’ve done is review some of the most trusted review software websites and compiled key pieces of information you will need to make an educated decision about the product. These include reviews from thousands of paying customers, ratings of functionality, pros and cons based on other small business owners’ feedback, and feature comparisons.
Lastly, I have reviewed ActiveCampaign’s documentation ranging from their knowledge base to blog posts and tutorials. This helped inform my review by providing a more detailed overview of some of the features I do not use frequently.
Rather than having to dig through all of this information yourself, I have summarized it for you in this one article.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s dive into my small business owner’s review of ActiveCampaign.
TL;DR: The person writing the review has used the product they are reviewing, and they have also looked at reviews from trusted sources. They have summarized the information for you so that you can make an educated decision about whether or not to purchase the product.

What Is ActiveCampaign?
ActiveCampaign is a powerful email marketing and automation system that allows you to automate your email communications with customers and potential customers. It can be used in several ways, but the most common use is to send out automated welcome emails, follow-up emails, and/or abandoned cart recovery emails.
ActiveCampaign has expanded beyond email marketing and now offers a sales platform, customer service, social media, and SMS marketing functionality as well. This makes it an even more comprehensive system that can meet the needs of a wide range of businesses. It still offers the same great email marketing features but has added additional functionality that can help you grow your business.
Some of these additional services (depending on the plan you select) include a fully-featured built-in CRM system, Live Chat, Social Media Monitoring, and more.
For the purposes of this review, I will remain focused on ActiveCampaign’s functionality in regards to email marketing and automation for your business leads and customers.
How Does ActiveCampaign Work?
ActiveCampaign works by allowing you to create “campaigns” which are basically just a series of emails that will be sent out automatically based on certain conditions. You can create as many campaigns as you want, and you can also create multiple “triggers” for each campaign. A trigger is simply an event that will cause the campaign to start sending emails.
For example, you could create a campaign that sends a series of welcome emails to new customers. The first email would be sent when someone signs up for your mailing list, the second email would be sent 3 days later, and the third email would be sent 7 days after the first. You can also create a campaign that sends a series of follow-up emails to people who have already purchased from you. The first email would be sent 1 week after the purchase, the second email would be sent 2 weeks after the purchase, and the third email would be sent 4 weeks after the purchase.

You can also create campaigns that are triggered by other events, such as someone visiting your website, clicking on a link in an email, or filling out a form.
ActiveCampaign also offers a powerful “automation” feature that allows you to perform complex tasks with just a few clicks. For example, you could automatically add new customers to a specific mailing list, add them to a waiting list, or send them a specific email based on their purchase history.
The possibilities are endless!
How Much Does ActiveCampaign Cost?
ActiveCampaign offers a variety of pricing plans, but the cheapest plan starts at $9/month. They also offer a free trial so you can try it out before you buy it.
Is it worth the price? That depends on your needs.

ActiveCampaign is a powerful system that can do a lot of things. If you need a system that can do everything, then yes, it is definitely worth the price. However, if you only need basic email marketing functionality then there are cheaper options available.

Now let’s take a closer look at some of these features.
Lead Management
Lead Database
You need one central system of record for your marketing leads and contacts.
This includes capturing important demographic and company information about each prospect and customer.
ActiveCampaign’s lead database can keep track of all interactions between prospects and your company, including website visits, email clicks, scoring changes, and data updates/history.
Quality Management
ActiveCampaign offers several features to help ensure the quality of your leads. These features include data deduplication, cleansing, and appending your marketing database.
When it comes to data, quality is king. Bad data can lead to bad decisions, and that can mean lost sales and opportunities for your business.
Cleansing and appending your marketing database are essential first steps to achieving data quality. The goal is to have a single view of each prospect, with accurate, updated information about their interactions with your company. This allows you to better target your marketing efforts, as well as measure the effectiveness of your campaigns.
Duplication is one of the biggest problems with data quality. It can lead to confusion and inconsistency in your marketing database, as well as wasted marketing efforts. Cleansing your data removes duplicate records and ensures that each prospect is represented only once in your system.
Segmentation
Segmentation in email marketing means dividing your list of contacts into groups, or segments, based on specific criteria. This allows you to send more relevant messages to your contacts, increasing the chances that they will open and click through your emails.
ActiveCampaign’s segmentation functionality allows you to group your leads and contacts into specific categories based on their demographics and behaviors. You can then filter your leads and contacts based on these groups, making it easier to target your marketing efforts.
ActiveCampaign provides several ways to segment your leads and contacts. You can filter on demographic and company attributes, as well as behavioral filters and CRM information. This allows you to target your leads and contacts more accurately and improve the quality of your leads.
Lead Scoring
How do you know which leads are most likely to buy from you? Lead scoring is one way to determine this.
Lead scoring is the process of assigning points to leads based on their characteristics. This allows you to prioritize your leads and focus your marketing efforts on those that are most likely to result in sales.

ActiveCampaign offers a sophisticated lead scoring system to help you prioritize your leads. You can assign a weight to each criterion that you use to score leads, such as recency, frequency, or website visits.
ActiveCampaign will automatically score your leads based on these weights, and will also update the score whenever a new interaction occurs. This allows you to keep track of which leads are most active and engaged with your company.
Lead Nurturing
You’ve done the hard work of capturing a lead’s information, now what?
Lead nurturing is the process of continuing to engage with a lead until they are ready to buy. It involves providing relevant content and messages to leads over time, to move them down the sales funnel.
ActiveCampaign offers a fully featured lead nurturing system that allows you to track prospects’ interactions with your company and then send them relevant messages over time.
This system is based on a series of campaign steps, which you can create yourself or use one of ActiveCampaign’s predefined steps. You can also create tasks and reminders to follow up on leads and set real-time sales alerts.
Behavior Tracking
Wouldn’t it be nice to know how your leads interact with your emails? Did they open them, click through to your website, or even buy something from you?
ActiveCampaign’s behavior tracking allows you to track your leads’ interactions with your company and determine the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns.
You can track a wide range of behaviors, such as email opens, landing page visits, link clicks, and purchases. This information is then available in ActiveCampaign’s reporting system so that you can see which campaigns are working and which ones need improvement.
CRM Integration
If you’re looking for a more comprehensive way to manage your leads and customers, ActiveCampaign’s CRM integration may be the answer.
ActiveCampaign offers a built-in CRM system that allows you to sync lead, contact, account, and opportunity information with your CRM system. You can also use ActiveCampaign’s built-in CRM system to track and manage your leads, contacts, and opportunities.
Already have another CRM system you use? No problem! ActiveCampaign integrates with some of the most popular CRM systems, so you can easily sync your data with the CRM system you already use.
Automated Alerts and Tasks
You’re busy! You don’t have time to constantly monitor your leads and contacts to see if they’ve been contacted, what content they’ve seen, or if they’ve been scored.
ActiveCampaign offers several automated alerts and tasks to help you stay on top of your leads.
You can set up real-time sales alerts to notify you when a lead is active or has made a purchase, and you can also create task reminders to follow up with leads. You can even have ActiveCampaign automatically add leads to specific campaign steps based on their behavior.
Alerts can be sent to you over email, RSS, or a mobile device, and will notify you of changes in prospect behavior. Tasks can be automatically created based on prospect behavior and can be synced with your CRM system.
This allows you to focus on your work while ActiveCampaign takes care of the lead management for you.
TL;DR: ActiveCampaign helps you with lead management and nurturing. You can assign weights to criteria used to score leads, and ActiveCampaign will automatically score leads based on these weights. AI and Automation
ActiveCampaign has spent the last several years building out what they call Customer Experience Automation (CX Automation) which is a process of automating the interactions between a company and their customers.
While some of this functionality is found within the email and marketing platform side of ActiveCampaign’s system, it’s just a piece of the larger puzzle.
ActiveCampaign has been aggressive in their expansion into other channels like chat, social media, and support.
Their goal is to eventually provide an “automated customer experience” where nearly all interactions with a company have the opportunity to be automated and respond to the customer in a way that feels human and personalized.
ActiveCampaign’s AI and automation functionality allows users to create rules for lead prioritization, scoring, and communication.
The software is designed to help identify the most important buyers and customers and to target them with the most effective sales engagement communications.
